Junior Research Group
Equal opportunities and freedom from discrimination, including in professional life, are values that are enshrined in law in our democracy. Studies indicate that scientific work in teams with actively designed diversity is particularly successful and produces more innovative research results.
The Junior Research Group "Diversity & Gender in Medicine" is dedicated to the development and implementation of an intervention to improve equal opportunities for marginalized groups on the way to more diversity and gender equity in research, teaching and health care in university medicine and the life sciences in the Berlin University Alliance.

AdvanceAcademia!
Under the title "AdvanceAcademia! Strengthening Academic Careers", the junior research group "Diversity and Gender in Medicine", funded by the Berlin University Alliance, is currently developing a programme to promote structured cooperation in tandem between doctoral researchers and their supervisors. Academic researchers (postdocs and early career professors) often take on the
(co-)supervision of doctoral projects. The successful completion of doctorates is closely linked to the academic productivity of the supervisors, e.g. in the form of publications or conference contributions. At the same time, the high dropout rates of doctoral students shows that support and supervision is experienced as insufficient or unstructured. In light of this, a programme will be developed that focuses on promoting cooperation between doctoral students and their supervisors, with the help of evidence-based interventions. This also means promoting a culture of effective and vibrant evaluation and feedback. Strengthening independent and close reflection on doctoral progress and building a gender- and diversity-sensitive attitude in research, teaching and health care are also goals of this project.

Career paths of women at Berlin universities
The cross-university programme ProFiL programme has been running at Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Technische Universität Berlin since 2004. The aim of the programme is to support female academics and accompany them on their way to a professorship. Selected participants go through a one-year programme that combines mentoring, science-specific training and seminars on strategic networking.
In the Charité's own mentoring programme, every year from September 2023 onwards, qualified and committed young female scientists are specifically supported and challenged over a period of 12 months and accompanied by recognised personalities from research, business, science administration and the clinical sector. The programme consists of three components: tandem work, i.e. mentoring in the narrower sense, various seminars and workshops, and interdisciplinary networking.
