Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (stress cardiomyopathy) is an acute coronary syndrome with typical local contraction weakness of the heart muscle, usually at the apex of the heart. This heart failure is very often triggered by severe mental stress situations and affects > 90% postmenopausal women. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a life-threatening disease with an 8% mortality. The causes are not fully understood yet. There is no specific therapy and an individual prognosis is not possible.

Aims

The aim of the study is to significantly expand knowledge about Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. The study aims to provide new insights into causes and drivers that favor the disease (TTC) and contribute to the expansion of knowledge in the area of diagnostics, prevention and therapy.

Recruitment

All patients treated for Takotsubo cardiomyopathy at the Charité and the German Heart Center Berlin between January 2008 and February 2015 have been invited to participate in the study.

Course of the study

In this study, we examined cardiovascular health of women and men with Takotsubo cardiomyopathy and compared the results of the study with controls in whom this cardiac event did not occur. In addition to surveying stress events and current living conditions, we performed blood pressure and vascular stiffness examinations. In addition to the measurement of weight, size and waist circumference, an ECG diagnosis was performed. For the cardiac risk factors and pre-existing diseases, the respondents answered a detailed questionnaire.

Data Analysis

At present, the extensive laboratory values (blood count, blood lipids, inflammatory values, stress and hormone status as well as other biological markers) and collected study data are being evaluated.
